Stoppers and Gestation
When the male chinchilla mates with his female, he secretes a fluid into the female which after conception forms a 'barrier' to prevent other males mating with the female. This 'barrier' is known as a stopper, and is dropped by the female some time after mating. Once you find a stopper, which is normally about 2 to 2.5cm in length, note down the date, and add 111 days to calculate the expected delivery date of the kits. The Gestation calculator below will assist in this...
Often only partial stoppers will be found, and care should be taken to look out for them, to aid you in providing what the female will need to help her give birth to, and successfully raise her kits. After a day or so stoppers will discolour and they are harder to spot, so be vigilant!
