Show Qualities of a Chinchilla

Size

Size is the second attribute regarding chinchillas which doesn't have anything to do with the fur qualities. This attribute (along with conformation) is the easiest to spot for new breeders and trainee judges, in that it's on obvious display. All other things being equal, the larger of two chinchillas will do better on the show table.

Size

The size of chinchillas is described in the NCS Appraisal Sheet as follows;

  1. Extra Large

  2. Large

  3. Medium

  4. Small

From a show perspective, all other things being equal, a large chinchilla will beat a smaller chinchilla. Should two animals be judged against each other which appear to be of the same size or volume, although where one is heavier than the other, the lighter animal with the greater volume of fur is to be preferred.

From a breeding perspective, many breeders prefer to breed with slightly smaller males and larger females, although care should be taken that chinchillas do not get so large and overweight that they become slow breeders, or that health issues regarding their size do no manifest themselves.
